KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, (CMC) – Veteran off-spinner Shane Shillingford claimed his first five-wicket haul of the season and the 38th of his career, to help Windward Islands Volcanoes claw their way back into their fourth round contest against Barbados Pride here Saturday.
Trailing by 138 on first innings after being dismissed for 222, the hosts hit back to leave Pride on 148 for nine in their second innings at the close – a lead of 286 heading into today’s final day at Arnos Vale.
Their enterprise was down to the former Test star Shillingford who ended with five for 70 from a marathon 28 overs.
Unlike their first innings, Pride’s batsmen struggled and only wicketkeeper Mario Rampersaud, unbeaten at the end on 31 and left-hander Jonathan Carter, 25, offered any resistance.
Earlier, Roland Cato struck his second half-century in his five outings as Volcanoes added a further 71, after resuming the penultimate day on 151 for five.
The 19-year-old converted his overnight 47 into 64 while Barbadian all-rounder Kyle Mayers chipped in with an unbeaten 56, with the pair extending their sixth wicket partnership to 59 before being separated.
Cato faced 151 balls and counted eight boundaries while the left-handed Mayers, unbeaten on 21 at the start, stroked six fours and a six in a 135-ball innings.
Off-spinner Kenroy Williams (3-21) claimed three of the last five wickets to fall while left-rm spinner Jomel Warrican picked up three for 49.
Armed with a substantial first innings lead, Pride failed to really capitalise, losing wickets in clusters to stumble their way through the final two sessions.
They lost left-handed opener Anthony Alleyne to the second ball of the innings without a run on the board, bowled by pacer Sherman Lewis and then saw the back of his partner Shayne Moseley for nine at 24 for two as Shillingford claimed his first wicket.
Carter and captain Shamarh Brooks (11) added 30 for the third wicket before both fell within four runs of each other in the space of 17 balls to leave Pride on 58 for four, and Kevin Stoute (21) and Williams (10) put on another 30 for the fifth wicket to steer their side to tea at 74 for four.
Stoute perished in the sixth over following the resumption, lbw to seamer Mayers as three wickets tumbled for two runs in the space of seven deliveries, to leave the visitors tottering on 90 for seven.
Rampersaud, who has faced 74 balls and counted two fours, then propped up the innings as he posted 39 for the eighth wicket with Justin Greaves who made 20.
