–for causing soldier’s death
A CENTRAL Lethem resident was on Wednesday released on $1M bail for causing the death of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lance Corporal, Devon Fraser.
The young soldier was killed during a motorcycle accident along the Lethem Public Road last week.
Helroy Pedro, 39, appeared before City Magistrate Judy Latchman and pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on October 18 at the Lethem Public Road, Central Rupununi, he drove his motorcycle in a dangerous manner which caused the death of Fraser.
Attorney Priana Sookraj, during her application for bail, told the court that Pedro was beaten by GDF ranks at the scene of the accident and is seriously injured.
With no objection raised by police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, the defendant was released on $1M bail, and the matter has been adjourned until November 6.
According to reports, at about 02:30 hrs on October 18, the deceased was walking along the corner of the roadway in the vicinity of Camp Kanuku, the GDF Base in Lethem, when a speeding CG motorcycle [number unknown] hit him from behind.
As a result of the impact, Fraser and the cyclist both received injuries about their bodies. Both were taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where Fraser was pronounced dead on arrival and the motorcyclist was admitted a patient.
When tested, the motorcyclist was found to be above the legal limit of alcohol consumption.
The now dead soldier was in Lethem as a member of the military band which provided musical accompaniment for the just-concluded activities there in celebration of Lethem becoming a town.
