Cane Grove brawl…Accused charged with manslaughter

–released on $500,000 bail

A 44-YEAR-OLD man accused of killing another during a confrontation at Cane Grove, Mahaica, was on Monday charged for manslaughter and released on $500,000 bail by Magistrate Wanda Fortune, at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court.
Ramesh Persaud of Sawah Street, Cane Grove, Mahaica, was not allowed to plead to the charge which read that on October 15, at Cane Grove, he unlawfully killed Harrynarine Ramnawaj.

Persaud’s attorney, Bernard Da Silva, told the court that his client was attacked by the deceased and his father and that he (Persaud) is also the virtual complaint (VC) in another matter where the deceased father wounded him.
Nevertheless, Persaud was released on $500,000 bail and ordered to return to court on December 1.

According to the facts of the matter, on the day in question about 11:45 hrs, the deceased Harrynarine Ramnawaj called “Khrishna” and “Pusha”, 32, and his father Chandrapaul Ramnawaj, 59, went to their farm at an area called `Long Dam’ where they observed a man stealing their plantains from a wooden structure which they had erected. The accused who was in the wooden structure at the time and the deceased got into an argument and the accused dealt the deceased and his father several chops about their bodies.
The two wounded men were rushed to a city hospital but the son was pronounced dead on arrival, while the father suffered the loss of two fingers as a result of the the incident.
