WITH the 2017 cycle season nearing an end, tomorrow’s Digicel-sponsored, Team Evolution-organised Cancer Awareness feature 35-lap cycle road race promises to be a `scorcher’ and should not be missed for any reason.

Defending champion of the event, Jamal John, will be hard-pressed to make a successful defence of his title. He will face fierce competition from a number of Guyana’s `cream of the crop’ – the likes of Raul Leal, Orville Hinds, Raynauth `Obeahman’ Jeffrey, Geron Williams, Andrew Hicks and Paul DeNobrega among others.
John, who has been very competitive and consistent this season and is the current points’ leader on the Guyana Cycling Federation’s (GCF) point standings. He is expected to get keen opposition, come tomorrow, as he will come up against stiffer competition from Williams and Jeffrey, who both have spent most of the 2017 season competing on the United States of America circuit with much success, allowing John to dominate the local scene.

Not to be outdone are the junior riders Briton John, Nigel Duguid, Jonathan Ramsuchit and Curtis Dey who have all been selected by the GCF to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the Junior Caribbean Road Race Championships in Barbados.
The juniors will be a part of the feature event as the two categories will be involved in the 35-lap event which is approximately 85 miles.
Only last Sunday, John won the 6th edition of the Kadir Mohamed `One Ounce of Gold’ cycle road race which was staged from Georgetown to Dora on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway and back, returning a winning time of three hours 13 minutes 3.6 seconds to capture the 80-mile event.
Jeffrey, Hinds, Shaquel Agard, Williams and DeNobrega occupied the other top five places respectively.

Tomorrow’s activity which wheels off at 07:70hrs with a one-lap race for DIGICEL staffers will see juveniles and mountain bikers riding together for five laps, while veterans under 45 years of ageas well as those over 45 years of age will compete together for 20 laps.
Over $900 000 in prize money and other incentives will be up for grabs during the day’s activity which starts outside the Guyana Defence Force, Camp Ayanganna headquarters on Irving Street and from there they will travel south along Irving Street, turn west on Carifesta Avenue, south into Camp Road, east into Thomas Road and north into Irving Street.
