Compensation for woman injured in Agricola shootout

IN response to an article published in Wednesday’s edition of the Stabroek News titled “Agricola woman still awaiting word on probe of police crossfire shooting” police said compensation was recommended, since the shooting was deemed ‘accidental’.

Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine said the police investigation was completed and legal advice was obtained. The police added that it was recommended that the incident which resulted in the gunshot injuries sustained by the victim was purely accidental in the circumstances, hence most unfortunate and that the victim should be compensated.

The appropriate communication has been transmitted to the relevant authority for consideration to be given in order that the legal advice may be effectuated, the police release stated. In the circumstances, police said the victim is respectfully advised to be patient as the possibility of compensation remains active, the release said.

The victim, Parmadai (only name given) was resting in her hammock at her house on July 11, 2017 at Lot 124 Caesar Street, Agricola when she was caught in a crossfire between police and gunmen. It was reported that a party of police went to Fourth Street, Agricola and gunfire ensued between them and two men who were armed with a sawn-off shotgun and a handgun.
During the exchange, Parmadai was struck by bullets to the buttocks and the left hand when the bandits reportedly used her yard as an escape route.
