COMMANDER of ‘B’ Division, Paul Williams, has confirmed that the prime suspect in the robbery committed on Sachin Ramrattan 28, and his pregnant wife and four year old son of Number 69 Village, East Berbice Corentyne, has been arrested.
The arrest came after police led an intelligence-based operation in Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice on Wednesday morning. On Saturday August 5, a gang of armed men invaded the fisherman’s home, carting off approximately $1.7 M in cash and valuables. During the attack the family had to jump through windows to save their lives. Initially, the police arrested five suspects, including a taxi driver who was found in close proximity to the crime scene. A search of his person found a small quantity of cannabis while a search of his car unearthed an unlicensed shotgun with one live round.
The taxi driver who was identified as Rabindra Kumar,26 on Wednesday appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charges: possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and unlawful possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Kumar pleaded not guilty to both charges and was remanded to prison until 27th August, 2017, when he will make his second court appearance.
