–To help address indiscriminate dumping of waste
THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has already received permission from the Ministry of Education to reintroduce the School Environment Quiz Competition that seeks to raise awareness of environmental issues.
The M&CC wants to reintroduce the competition, which it hosted many years ago, because it has been found that this is an “easy” way to send out important messages, Public Relations Officer, Debra Lewis told the Guyana Chronicle.
The focus of this year’s competition, which targets all government primary schools, is climate change, the environment, and global warming.
According to Lewis, the M&CC has found that the indiscriminate dumping of waste still poses a serious problem to the municipality, and hence, the Council believes that spreading information, through the competition, can impact significantly on children, who can then transmit it to their families.
The M&CC has already given the schools the information that needs to be studied, and the preliminary round of the competition will begin on June 12. The semi-finals and finals will be held subsequently.
