GUYANA Chess Federation paid a courtesy call to the Georgetown Prison on Wednesday, with a delegation led by president James Bond, vice-president Frankie Farley, committee member Anthony Drayton and honorary member Errol Tiwari.
The GCF executives met with Senior Superintendent Nickelon Elliot, Officer in Charge of the Georgetown Prison, and committed to forming for the first time a Chess Club in the penal system.
The GCF committed to supplying chess boards, clocks, books and trainers to ensure the success of the club which Bond indicated will be directly linked to the Executive of the Federation.
Elliot indicated that he would love the GCF to extend its reach to the other prisons; a proposal which was immediately accepted.
Before meeting with the Officer in Charge, the delegation met with a group of ten inmates under the guidance of Cadet Officer Hale.
The group shared their experiences of how chess helped them and were given inspiration through presentations by young Anthony Drayton and Errol Tiwari.
This engagement is seen as an excellent start by the new executive of the GCF, who will now on rolling out their chess in school programmes.
