ACTING Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine, said Friday that the Guyana Police Force will be establishing a unit here to specifically address cybercrime.
He made the disclosure at the re-commissioning of the Felix Austin Computer Training Centre at Eve Leary, which will now be known as the Zara Cyber-Security Centre.
Ramnarine said the newly-commissioned centre is geared to equip members of the public and Force with knowledge in Information Communication Technology (ICT). He said it was the Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud, who, while he was Crime Chief, first approached the Zara Realty Group of Companies about working with the GPF on certain projects.

Ramnarine said that with the crime of choice these days being those that are Internet-related, the Centre will be utilised to provide capacity-building to deal with cyber threats, which demand a wide partnership in a permanent way for tackling cybercrimes.
He said that the Centre will be the resource location to equip ranks with skills and competency to have an informed approach, and the Force saw it necessary to train two of their ranks, who will in turn train others.
He said that 57 ranks were exposed to overseas training in 2015, and more than 100 in 2016. About 30 ranks are in line, so far, for overseas training this year.
The Zara Group of Companies, Acting Commissioner Ramnarine said, has contributed tremendously to the GPF, whereby they have expended a total of $20.5M towards the establishment of three computer centres here.
The GPF/Zara Computer centre in Berbice was commissioned on June 2, 2012, the one in Essequibo on July 8, 2013, and the one in Georgetown on November 28, 2013, all by then Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell.
