The Felix Austin Police College, Berbice branch has formed a youth group, comprising of fifteen youths from Kildonan, Nurney and Friendship Villages on the Corentyne.
An additional sixteen youths are expected to join the group soon. The youth group joins 19 others across the ‘B’ Division as part of the Guyana Police Force’s Social Crime Prevention Strategy.
Assistant Superintendent of Police and the College’s Commandant, Antonio Fredericks is behinds the upgrading of the college’s mess hall, placement of fans in the two barrack rooms, implementation of modern air conditioned classroom and the construction of a Shade House and the formation of the youth group.
The youth group will be headed by Corporal 20968 Ramsay and assisted by Corporal 21140 Austin; the focus of the group is to occupy the youths’ time constructively by teaching them various life skills along with visiting historical sites, camping and partaking in sporting activities.
ASP Fredericks urged the youths to stay away from drugs and crime and to focus on their education to become hardworking citizens.
“Our first aim of this group is to teach you the necessary skill in using a computer, since we have the facility and it is done by Cpl. 20968, the person who will be heading the group. After that, we will start various training programs in teaching you various topics as it relates to everyday life; as time goes by we will be implementing tie-dying, block making, sewing just to name a few,” ASP Fredericks said.
He further urged the youths to remain disciplined and respectful.
“Because often times when these things are omitted it damage us and dampens our future; always do the best at what you do and always try to aim high and once you have those qualities you will reach far in life. Finally, remember to stay away from drugs and crime.”
