THE Department of Labour on Monday carried out an inspection of ongoing construction work at the National Resources Ministry’s Secretariat on Duke Street, Kingston.
The inspection was at the behest of Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ms Simona Broomes, whose office is located in a completed section of the two-storey building, which is still under construction.

Before carrying out the inspection, the Labour, Occupational Safety and Health Officer, Mr Roydon Croal was invited to a meeting with Minister Broomes in her office.

According to Minister Broomes, it is important that Government officials lead by example. “I called them because it is important that we live what we preach. I believe in workers’ rights; I believe in safety, and I believe that workers’ safety should be placed first,” she posited.

Minister Broomes noted that provision has been made for washroom and lunchroom facilities, with all the required amenities. She said that based on his assessment, Croal will indicate what areas are in need of improvement, so that the Ministry can take appropriate remedial action.
“It is important that the environment is safe for our workers,” the minister said.

Even before the inspection was done, there was an obvious need for key warning and informative signs, as well as fire extinguishers to be placed at strategic points.

The ministry was also advised of the importance of having copies of the Occupational, Safety and Health Policy Act at the premises, all of which the minister has committed to sourcing.
