PHILADELPHIA Unions defender Warren Creavalle along with San Juan Jabloteh FC’s Vurlon Mills and Samuel Cox of Wealdstone FC were named in the Golden Jaguars’ 30-man provisional squad that was named by coach Wayne Dover as Guyana prepare to face Martinique on Tuesday, March 28, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
This will be the second meeting between the two countries, with the first being played five years ago (2012) in Martinique where the Jamaal Shabazz-coached Golden Jaguars drew 2-2 in a friendly contest.
Creavalle made his Golden Jaguars debut during the CFU Caribbean Cup, where Guyana were booted by Jamaica. The Major League Soccer (MLS) stand-out defender vowed to return once called upon by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
Mills, who recently made a return to the Trinidad and Tobago Pro-League with San Juan Jabloteh during the club’s run in the CFU Club Championship, along with usual team captain Cox, is a part of 13 overseas players called by Dover.
Akel Clarke – Central FC (Trinidad & Tobago), Andrew Durant – San Juan Jabloteh FC (Trinidad & Tobago), Adrian Butters – York Region Shooters (Canada), Christopher Bourne – Islington Admiral United FC (England), Quincy Adams – S.V. Nishan 42 (Suriname), Brandon Beresford – Rochester Rhinos FC (USA), Daniel Wilson – S.V. Nishan 42 (Suriname), Kelsey Benjamin – Caledonia AIA FC (Trinidad & Tobago), Shaquille Agard – Durham United FC (Canada) and Marcel Barrington – Hendon FC (England) are other players called from outside of the local football landscape.
Benjamin, National U-17 goalkeeper Jonathon Copeland of Linden, Job Caesar (Santos FC), Ralph Parris – Georgetown FC (Guyana) and Ryan Hackett – Fruta Conquerors FC (Guyana) have all been given their first senior national call-up by Dover..
The Golden Jaguars will also have some familiar faces, as Trayon Bobb (Uitvlugt FC), Solomon Austin (Fruta Conquerors FC), Pernell Schultz (Fruta Conquerors FC), Delon Lanferman (Den Amstel FC) and Eon Alleyne (Fruta Conquerors FC) were called to vie for a spot to face the French next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, former national captain Charles ‘Lilly’ Pollard will make a return to the National team. This time however, as an assistant to Dover.
“This is a strong, diverse national squad, with a rich mix of home and overseas-based players and some promising young players,” said GFF Technical Director Ian Greenwood.
“We are all looking forward to Tuesday’s clash in Linden, and will be well prepared and ready for the challenge ahead.
“It is going to be a great opportunity to measure our progress against what is likely to be an impressive Martinique side. We are urging the whole country to get behind the Golden Jaguars.” Greenwood added.
As an overseas department of the French Republic, Martinique is not a member of FIFA and is therefore not eligible to enter the FIFA World Cup or any competition organised first-hand by the organisation. Martinique is, however, a member of CONCACAF and CFU and is eligible for all competitions organised by both organisations.
While Guyana, despite being a powerhouse in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), have never qualified for the Gold Cup (male version), Martinique are preparing to make their fifth appearance at the CONCACAF showpiece this year.
Martinique will be placed in Group B of the 2017 Gold Cup alongside five-time champions USA, Panama, and Haiti/Nicaragua.
The French territory will play their first game against Haiti or Nicaragua (pending play-off game between the two countries) on July 8, the USA on July 12 and Panama on July 15.
The match, scheduled for kick off at 20:00hrs, brings international football back to Linden for the first time since 2011.
