Guyana has hosted several international club tournaments, the most prominent being the Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Festival, but never an international country tournament.

GUYANA will host its first Pan American Cup this year, following the announcement by the Pan American Hockey Federation recently, with the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) hailing it as a historic achievement.

The release from the body today indicated that Guyana will host both the men’s and women’s qualifying tournaments for the FIH Indoor World Cup 2018, a major accomplishment according to GHB president Philip Fernandes.
“The Pan American Indoor Championships is a huge opportunity for Guyana. It is the first event of this magnitude for hockey that Guyana will host, in the history of the federation and it puts Guyana in the limelight for hockey.”

He added, “It gives the country a great opportunity to showcase what Guyana is all about and that Guyana could function as a very effective host nation for international tournaments.”
Meanwhile, Coco Budeisky, PAHF president, trusts that having a new country hosting a PAHF tournament will motivate other countries to apply for future events.

According to the PAHF website, following the recommendation of the Bid Evaluation Committee, the Board of Directors approved Guyana to host the PAHF event for the first time and in the city of Georgetown.
It will be held between October 14 and 22 with the exact dates to be confirmed along with the schedule of matches, which will be determined upon completion of team entries.
