Gold miners accused of stealing dredge mats

THREE employees of a gold mining company were granted $50,000 bail each by Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan, on a simple larceny charge.Terrence Richards, 37 of Karou Village, North Rupununi; Ryan Richards, 35 of Santa Mission and Jarred Stanly, 23 of Judge Creek, Pomeroon River, all pleaded not guilty to the joint charge.

It is alleged that the trio, between January 20 and January 21, 2017, at Kumakuma Backdam, Mazaruni River, stole two dredge mats valued $150,000, property of Alfro Alphonso and Sons mining company.

According to the police Prosecutor, Neville Jeffers, on the day in question, the trio was working at the Kumakuma mining pit and stole the dredge mat.

When the items were discovered missing, a report was made to the police and a search was carried out along the mining area and one of the mats was found in another mining pit.

The Chief Magistrate released the men on $50,000 bail each after the prosecution made no objection to bail being granted. The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate Court for February 9, 2017.
