A MINER was sentenced to nine months imprisonment by Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan, on Wednesday after he confessed to breaking into a mining camp.Rawle Lewis, 39, admitted that on January 23, 2017 at Arinu Backdam, Cuyuni River,he broke into the mining camp of Robson Fillo and stole a fuel pump, electric water pump and a digital amplifier, totaling $360,000.

The unrepresented Bartica resident begged the court for a second chance as he stood in the prisoner dock wiping tears from his eyes.

The court heard that on the day in question at about 06:30hrs, Fillo secured his mining camp and went away. However, when he returned he noticed the camp’s door wrenched open and the articles missing.

He reported the matter to the police and an eyewitness recalled seeing Lewis around the mining camp acting in a suspicious manner.

A radio massage was sent to the Itaballi Police Station for the man’s arrest, and during a stop and search at the Station checkpoint, Lewis was nabbed with the amplifier in his possession.
