A 23-YEAR-OLD miner was remanded to prison on Wednesday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for the offense of simple larceny.Seon Maynard of Alberttown, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on December 24, 2016, at Stabroek Market he stole a $150,000 gold chain from Robert Tindal, a police officer attached to Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).
Maynard did not have legal representation but explained to the court that he was in Georgetown shopping with his girlfriend when she left him outside the market to buy beef to make pepperpot.
The accused further protested the he was burdened with shopping bags as he stood outside the market when the police arrested him.
“The people start shout leff duh boy is na he thief the chain,” Maynard told the court as he pointed out that he was beaten by the police officer.
However the Police Prosecutor informed the court that Maynard’s explanations are not true and that the gold chain was recovered in his hands.
The prosecutor objected to the man being released on bail since he gave the police conflicting home addresses. Bail was refused and he was remanded to prison until January 12, 2017.
