FOOTBALL action at the Pee Wee level is not taking a break with the 3rd annual Smalta Girls schools tournament set to kick off today at the Ministry of Education Ground.
Starting at 10:00hrs today, St Pius will take on St Agnes while St Gabriel’s will have to dig deep if they are to overcome South Ruimveldt Primary.
From 10:45hrs, Stella Maris will go toe-to-toe with Mae’s Primary while F.E. Pollard do battle with St Angela’s. Tucville will oppose St Margaret’s from 11:30hrs on field one while across the ground North Georgetown will face Smith Memorial.
West Ruimveldt will take on Winfer Gardens from 12:15hrs while St Stephen’s battle Redeemer.
During the tournament launch earlier this week, co-Director of Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca, lauded the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) for its intention to be integrally involved in the tournament since it fits into their plans to develop the sport from the grassroots level.
He urged that parents continue to support their children, especially the girls in the sport.
Ansa McAl’s representative Sean Abel said that having accepted the Platinum sponsor tag since the tournament’s inception, his company is happy to be involved once more.
Ministry of Public Health personnel Joy Gravesande congratulated the participants, reminding them that all of them are winners while and Head of Physical Education within the Ministry of Education Nicholas Fraser wished the tournament the great success.
The teams will be divided into four groups of four and will be played on a round-robin basis with the top two finishers from each group advancing to the knockout phase.
All matches will be played at the Ministry of Education ground.
