A Labourer of Number 69 Village, East Berbice Corentyne is counting his losses after fire gutted his two storied wooden home on Tuesday evening.

Baijnauth Baichand, 46, called ‘Pandit’, lives alone and was not at home when the fire started. When he returned at 19:30h, the house was engulfed in flames.

“I went by a friend, when me go home me see police and fire service by me and the whole house in fire. It de almost done burn out,” a distraught Baichand said.

The fire is believed to be electrical in origin since a Guyana Power and Light wire collapsed and the one connected to the house fell to the ground in Baichand’s yard

He related that there was no electricity in his home; however he was informed by a GPL crew member at the scene that the collapsed wire was a live one.

“Them tell me is ah GPL wire cause the fire, me nah had nothing in this house that could ah cause a fire, me nah even cook in here yesterday.”

Baichand, who has been living at the Lot 145 Number 69 Village address for the past four years, said he has nowhere to go and no finances to rebuild. He has sought refuge at a friend’s place in the meant time.
