WHEN positive things occur, `ole people does say, Da ah de boy fuh de gal’, well that was exactly what happened on Sunday when Uitvlugt engaged archrivals Pouderoyen in their (Uitvlugt) final fixture of the West Demerara Football Association/STAG Senior League. The end result was a 1-1 draw that gave Uitvlugt the much-needed one point to capture league championship honours with an unassailable lead of 26 points.
Requiring just a single point, the Warriors came from one goal down to win the title via a Jamal Petty 43rd minute strike.
Pouderoyen had opened the scoring in the 20th minute from a Morgan Denny gem of a strike after receiving a cross from the right side while inside the left of the penalty box, and unleashing a left foot volley that directed the ball into the right corner of the opposition’s goal.
Six minutes earlier, Denny had placed the ball into Uitvlugt’s goal from the penalty spot, but the goal was disallowed as the official deemed that a Pouderoyen player had entered the penalty area before the shot was taken.
Uitvlugt then grabbed the much-needed equaliser in the 43rd minute when Petty’s tame shot rolled past a diving Pouderoyen custodian Sherwin Bernard – into the lower left corner of the goal.
Meanwhile, Eagles secured a walkover victory from Beavers.
