Alleged drunk driver granted bail in fatal accident

Michael Fraser, 50 of Annandale, East Coast Demerara appeared before City Magistrate Fabayo Azore charged with cause of death by dangerous driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

Fraser, an operation supervisor, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on November 5 at Nelson Mandela Public Road, Georgetown he drove motor car PSS 8813 in a dangerous manner thereby causing the death of Bertram Cummings.

He also pleaded not guilty to the charge of driving the said vehicle while he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol measured at .161.

Police Prosecutor, Stephen Telford made no objection to the accused being released on bail but requested that it be granted at a substantial amount along with the suspension of his driver’s license.

The prosecutor pointed out that Fraser was released on station bail by police after the accident while Cummings was in the hospital however the man later succumbed to his injuries. The Magistrate granted Fraser $250,000 bail for the cause of death and $7,500 bail for during under the influence.  The matter is adjourned until November 30 for report.
