Bandit shot dead by miner

A MINER shot and killed one of three bandits after they attempted to break into his 5th Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara home on Wednesday morning.Police have apprehended one of the bandits who has been identified as a 27-year- old male from West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

The man was arrested in the vicinity of the crime scene and is assisting police with their investigation.

Police Public Relations Office Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan said investigations revealed that about 02:15hrs Wednesday morning, a 38-year-old miner was awakened by a loud noise emanating from the lower flat of his house.

Upon checking, he saw two males, one armed with a handgun, attempting to gain entry into a southern door.

The miner raised an alarm and during this process, discharged his licensed firearm in the bandits’ direction, hitting one of them who fell.

The two other robbers, including one armed with a firearm, on seeing what happened bolted from the house and scaled the fence.

The matter was reported and ranks of a mobile patrol responded promptly and rushed the shot bandit, who was clad in a three quarter-pants and a black vest tied around his neck, to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital.

The robber who was shot twice to the neck was pronounced dead on arrival, and was subsequently taken to the Lyken Funeral Home.

Another of the men who tried to escape was captured in the vicinity of the crime scene.

The miner who gave his name as “Rupee” said Wednesday was the seventh occasion he has been a victim of banditry and is tired of the crime situation.

Recounting what happened, he said when he heard a suspicious noise in his lower flat, he discovered three men attempting to bend his steel door to gain entry into his house.

Realising one of the men had a firearm; he immediately opened fire hitting one of them. After the ordeal, the miner said he contacted the police.
