-referees for One Star exam in Barbados

WHILE most sporting associations will be slowing down their activities at the end of the year, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) would be stepping up their’s.
The GBA will be hosting the Terrence Alli National Open tournament this weekend at the National Gymnasium.
The three-day event would be followed by encampment of approximately 16 boxers
. In November a team of six boxers, two coaches and three referee/judges will travel to Suriname for an international competition there.
Early in December the association is scheduled to send 13 boxers, three coaches and five referee/judges to the Caribbean Development tournament in Barbados. All five referees will sit a One Star exam while in Barbados.
“It will be a bit hectic over the next two months for some of our boxers and officials as there is heightened activity,” GBA president Steve Ninvalle stated. “They are all important in the development of boxers and officials but most critical for me is the certification of the referees. It is my personal hope that all five can return home as certified One Star.”
The referee/judges will officiate at the Caribbean Development tournament. GBA Technical Director Terrence Poole has been charged with leading a team to select the six boxers for the competition in Suriname.
The GBA recently accepted an invitation to participate in the November 26 competition and president of the Suriname Boxing Association,Remie Burke,is due in Guyana next week for final discussion.
Meanwhile, the Republican Gym is expected to spring a surprise on current National Champion Gym the Guyana Defence Force. The Republican will be led by reigning national heavyweight champion Jason `AK 47’ Barker who recently returned with a gold medal from a Tri-Nation tournament in Barbados.
The three-day Terrence Alli National Open tournament will commence on Friday at the National Gymnasium and conclude on Sunday. The GBA has scheduled a fund raising take-away lunch for the last day of the competition.
