FIVE young men armed with handguns robbed and terrorised shoppers Monday morning at the HUA Supermarket at Lot 521, Section A, Block Y, Great Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara.Reports revealed that the men drove up in a heavily tinted Toyota Spacio and barged into the supermarket where they held up more than 20 persons, including the proprietor in the supermarket.
The men, who appeared to have an idea that the Chinese-owned supermarket was restocking for the day, grabbed millions of dollars from the cash register before proceeding to rob shoppers, who they locked in a storage room.
“The place was opened up and the shutter was not pulled down, so people still keep coming into the supermarket, and as they come in, the men stick them up and take their cell phones and valuable and lock them in the storage room,” one of the victims said.
According to an employee, the business has been in operation for less than two years and Monday was the first time it was robbed.
The employee also revealed that one of the relatives of the Chinese owner was beaten and asked to provide more cash.
After grabbing all the currency they can put their hands on, the bandits collected the shoppers’ phones, phone cards, cigarettes and removed the security DVR system before making good their escape.
