-as Operation Safeway continues
THE Guyana Police Force has recorded 4,250 cases against drivers as Operation Safeway continues to curb the number of road fatalities, Police Press Officer Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan disclosed.
Of this amount, Ramlakhan said, 1,371 persons were charged with speeding while 274 were charged for driving under the influence of alcohol. The other cases were made out against drivers for other traffic offences, the superintendent said.
Accident figures from September 15th to October 6th, 2016 show a remarkable decrease in all categories relative to the same period last year. Fatal accidents decreased by 44.4%, serious accidents decreased by 47%, minor accidents decreased by 21.4%, and so-called damage accidents decreased by 40%.
Acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine has declared that Operation Safeway is here to stay despite the criticism that the measure is going to fail like the other operations that were implemented in the past.
“From the evidence so far, Safeway hasn’t failed, isn’t failing, and will not fail…,” he said. “Operation Safeway will not be just another Traffic Campaign.”
