Edghill, Britton into quarter-finals at Caribbean TT Championships

TAKING straight-sets wins against Jose Toribio and St Lucia’s Daniels Andrew, Guyana’s Kyle Edghill topped Group Four and advanced into the quarter-finals of the men’s Under-21 singles, where he is also joined by Guyana’s Shemar Britton, when the 59th Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championships continued yesterday in the Dominican Republic.A Caribbean Junior bronze medallist, Britton also secured two wins to advance into today’s quarterfinals, securing wins over Trinidad’s Arun Roopnarine and Barbados’ Kristian Doughty.
Against Roopnarine the national men’s Under-21 champion took a 2-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-9 win, while he finished off Doughty with 11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9. ending as the second-best player in his group.
As the team competition at the championships concluded and the individual singles began, the Guyana boys found themselves positioned into groups of four, where only the top two players from each group advanced into the quarterfinals, after playing in a round-robin format.
Edghill’s match against Toribio played out 11-8, 11-6, 11-4, while Andrew went under with a 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 margin. Edghill is now set to come up against Barbados’ Tyrese Knight today while Britton will battle against Dominican Republic’s Isaac Vila for his place in the semi-finals.
Guyana’s other player in the competition Elisha Johnson, playing in Group 3, failed in his bid to advance into the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, National men’s runner-up champion Nigel Bryan is competing in the men’s singles.
The boys’ performance in the singles follows Guyana’s fourth place finish in the team competition.
