Bicycle mechanic charged with armed robbery

A BICYCLE mechanic was remanded to prison on Thursday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for the offence of robbery under-arms.Oswald Matthews, 44, of Robb Street, Georgetown is accused of robbing Ewert Shepherd of a cell phone and $1,500 cash while being armed with a cutlass on July 12, at High Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones opposed bail citing the gravity of the charge and the fact that an offensive weapon was used during the commissioning of the robbery.

These objections were upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was refused bail. Matthews, who was unrepresented was ordered to make his next court appearance on September 9.
