Ann’s Grove, Eagles advance to quarter-final round

ANN’S Grove and Eagles United booked their places in the 21st Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament on Sunday evening when they defeated Cougars and Uitvlugt in the last-of-16 round of the competition at the Victoria ground, East Coast Demerara. The East Coast team Ann’s Grove edged Cougars of Berbice 2-1 through a 28th minute goal from Hikosie Denny and a Quincy Johnson’s 32nd minute goal.
Mark Wong pulled one back for Cougars in the 70th minute.
In the other game of the double-header card, Eagles of Linden also edged Uitvlugt of West Demerara 1-0 through a Jameel Allicock 53rd minute.
The event will continue on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) with four matches beginning at 13:00hrs.
In the opening game, Guyana Police Force will match force with Sunburst Camptown in an all-Georgetown affair, while from 17:00hrs, Santos of Georgetown take on Beavers of West Demerara.
From 19:00hrs, Riddim Squad tackle Pouderoyen in an all-West Demerara affair. The feature match brings together Western Tigers of Georgetown and Den Amstel of West Demerara.
The winners of the competition will receive $700 000 and the Mayor’s trophy which has been donated by Aruwai Resort while the runners-up will be rewarded with $300 000 and the Ansa McAl trophy.
The third-place teams will earn $200 000 and the John Fernandes trophy while the fourth-placed will collect $100 000 and the Minister of State trophy.
The player scoring the highest number of goals in the tournament will be rewarded with a three-piece suite, compliments of AH&L Kissoon’s Furniture Store.
