Guyana Girls beat Jamaica in opening round of Team competition

THE Guyana Girls’ team, led by Caribbean champion Larissa Wiltshire, secured an opening 5-0 win against Jamaica yesterday as the Team competition at the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships served off at the South Sound Squash Centre in the Cayman Islands. Wiltshire, Taylor Fernandes, Rebecca Low, Makeda Harding and Abosaide Cadogan all bagged wins.
With Cadogan and Low giving the team their first two points, Guyana were already guaranteed the victory when national champion Fernandes sealed the deal against five-time Caribbean champion Alyssa Mullings, to take the score to 3-0.
Fernandes took down Mullings 10-12, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6. Cadogan finished 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 against Alia Haddad, while Low played to 11-2, 11-8, 12-10 against Mira Handa.
Jamaica still could not get one in, as matches continued with Harding taking on Mia Lake and Wiltshire coming up against Mia Mahfood. Harding won 11-4, 10-12, 12-10, 11-5, while Wiltshire prevailed 11-1, 11-6, 11-4.
The Girls’ team competition will see six teams vying for the title, including home team Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Bermuda.
Yesterday’s opening matches also saw Trinidad defeat the Cayman girls 4-1, and Barbados collect a 5-0 triumph over Bermuda.
The Girls’ teams are playing in a round-robin format, and are now set to take on the Cayman Islands today, Trinidad tomorrow, Bermuda on Friday, and Barbados on Saturday when the competition is scheduled to end.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Boys’ team were set to take on the Cayman Islands last evening. The Boys are split into two sets with Guyana grouped in Pool B with Cayman and Jamaica. Pool A comprises Barbados, Trinidad, Bermuda and the OECS teams.
The Boys come up against Cayman tomorrow before the competition enters the semi-finals on Friday. The finals will be played on Saturday.
