A SPECIALIST scrum coach is likely to come soon from Argentina to help the ‘Green Machine’ prepare for the Rugby America North (RAN) 15s Finals later this month in Mexico City.The Argentine Ambassador to Guyana, Luis Martino, Wednesday said the specialist coach has been identified after the national squad, together with Minister of Education Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, put in a last-minute request for help. He said what is left now is for the selected coach to confirm availability.
“We are expecting, presumably … that the person will be ready….
“So once I get that word from him, we will rush in order to get him here,” Ambassador Martino told reporters at his Bel Air Park, Georgetown residence.
The initiative is also being supported by the Guyana Olympics Association, the ambassador emphasised.
Once the coach gets here, he will try to push in a week’s work and then fly with the team to Mexico for another week of training before the finals on July 23.
Ambassador Martino said that the specialist scrum coach was requested because that is the weaker part of the game that the team needs to be in good shape to take the title.
The ambassador said that the support for Guyana’s Rugby is part of a long-term project to support the development of the sport here with “a vision of social inclusion”.
He said that the case study will see youths, ages 5 to 6, being taught in schools then clubs and onto the national level.
Guyana are ranked 46th in the world and 8th in the Americas.
