THE Georgetown-based side Sparta Boss made a successful defence of their Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” football title when they won it for the second time in as many years on Friday evening.Led by Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and Devon Millington, the Sparta side spared no prisoners from Linden’s team 25 side in securing their second title at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
Chan in the 23rd minute through a cannon of a shot gave Sparta the lead while on the contrary, Millington utilised ball skills to slip a pair of defenders and slot his shot home in the 59th
The Sparta Boss Team received the $400,000 and the championship trophy but most importantly will jet of to St. Lucia for the regional tournament which runs from July 2-3.
“Team 25” walked away with the second place prize of $150,000 and the respective trophy while the other Linden side, Wisroc, finished in third place ahead of Channel 9 Warriors.
In that third place play-off, Wisroc defeated Channel 9 Warriors 3-1 on the back of a double by Clarence Huggins in the 3rd and 7th and a supporting goal from Michael Williams in the 11th.
Kemo Lawrence was the lone scorer for the Georgetown unit in the 9th; Wisroc collected $100,00 prize while Channel 9 had to settle for $50,000 and the respective trophy.
Meanwhile, for the regional championships the side will meet the hosts and defending champions St Lucia, Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, and the newest country to join the line-up, Curaçao.
The eleven country teams will be vying for the chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to Brazil, the mecca of football, with tickets to a major game in Rio de Janeiro.
With this exciting grand prize to Brazil, Guinness has heightened the competitive stakes, setting the stage for a series of thrilling showdowns.
