The mother of the three – year – old who was raped, appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court Thursday, charged with willful neglect with intent to cause the child unnecessary suffering and injury to her health.
Due to the serious nature of the incident, the matter was held in – camera, thus reporters and members of the public were not allowed inside the court room. She was unrepresented and was remanded to prison until June 27.
The mother of five, who resides at Corriverton, was not required to plead to charge, which alleged that she is a “known alcoholic.”
It is further alleged that on June 19, she went on a drinking spree, returned home at 20:30 hrs and retired to bed with her children. However, at around 1:30hrs, she awoke to find the baby girl missing from the bed. Upon checking, she discovered the toddler in front of the one flat home bleeding severely from her vagina.
The toddler was taken to the Police Station where the mother was advised to take the child to the hospital, where it was confirmed that she was indeed raped.
Meanwhile, the male friend of the mother was released on $100,000 station bail Wednesday as investigation continues.
According to a police source, the file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice while the Police in ‘B’ Division are working closely with the Child Care and Protection agency to ensure the toddler and her two siblings are being cared for in the absence of their mother.
The child remains a patient at a medical Institution in Berbice; her condition is listed as stable.
