THE Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) joined the rest of the world yesterday in celebrating Olympic Day 2016.In celebration of the 2016 edition, the GOA planned a week of activities in various disciplines which started on June 20 and will conclude on July 3.
It includes an Open Badminton Tournament which started June 20 and finishes on June 26 at the National Gymnasium.
Additionally, Taekwondo saw a Tournament (Poomse and Gyrugi) at the Guyana Teachers Union Hall which started June 22 and will finish today at 17:00hrs.
Cyclists will benefit from a Youth competition scheduled for June 25, while Rugby players will see a Men’s 15s and Women’s 7s games on June 26 from 11:00hrs to 16:00 hrs.
Tennis and Volleyball are also scheduled for June 26, with the former from 09:00hrs to 17:00hrs at the Racquet Centre and the latter at the National Park from 10:00hrs to 16:00hrs.
The GOA’s Triathlon is set for July 2 from 06:00hrs to 08:00hrs at the National Aquatic Centre and precedes the Open Water Swim on July 3 in Linden from 07:00hrs to 08:00hrs.
Rounding out the activities are Karate (Kata and Kumite) and Weightlifting also on July 3, with the YMCA hosting the former from 13:00hrs to 18:00hrs. Weightlifting will be hosted at the St Rose’s Basketball Court, 15:00hrs-17:00hrs.
However, the highlight of the activities will be the annual Olympic Day Run/Walk/Jog on June 26 with the starting point being the YMCA, Thomas Lands at 06:00hrs. All are invited to participate and will receive and Olympic Day T-shirt and certificate signed by the International Olympic Committee president. Olympic Day 2016 was celebrated under the three pillars – Move, Learn and Discover
Of the three pillars:
‘Move’ encourages persons of all ages and abilities to be involved in some form of physical activity.
‘Learn’ involves the teaching of Olympic values and providing information on the positive effects of sport on society.
‘Discover’ encourages persons to attempt sports which they have not previously tried.
