GUYANA’s Golden Jaguars registered a 7-0 thumping of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) as action in the 2016 Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup continued on Saturday.Playing in a must-win game at the Adelita Cancryn Playing Field, the Jags were on top of their game in the demolition of the home side with captain Samuel Cox praising his charges.
“We came and we did the job at hand. We came and we knew what we were expecting and we capitalised on what coach Dover and coach Jamaal said to us; it was very professionally done,” said Captain Cox.
He continued, “We got in our plus figures in our goal difference and we didn’t concede any goals. I don’t know how other results affected us, but I think that should see us through to the next round and that was the mission and I think we have done that so on to the next round.”
Opening the scoring for the Jags was Trayon Bobb in the 23rd minute, followed two minutes later by a Ricky Shakes strike.
Devon Millington (30th min) and Shakes in the 44th ended the first half in fine style for the touring Jags.
Returning in the second, the Jags continued the onslaught as Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams (68′), Bobb (75′) and Abrams (88′) rounded out the 7-0 score line.
Abrams also gave his views on scoring, saying “It is a good feeling. First of all I want to thank father for putting me back in the squad and it’s a blessed year and thank God for the goals them. To my fans back home, I made you guys proud and I did.”
Trayon Bobb added, “For me, it was a wonderful feeling but also the victory was more like kinda important because we stuck to what we wanted and we just went out there and delivered,” while Shakes said “It felt good you know’ I’ve got five goals for the national team now and I’m happy with the five goals. It [the win] was very important.”
In group three, Guyana currently leads second-placed Curacao with both teams on three points. However, Guyana has played two games with a goal difference of positive four (nine scored and five conceded) while Curacao has played one game with a goal difference of a positive three (five scored and two conceded). The USVI has yet to score and has conceded seven.
Guyana’s spot in the third round will be decided tomorrow when the USVI take on Curacao with the former needing to score 11 goals without conceding to go through, while Curacao only has to score to go atop the table.
