GEORGETOWN Mayor Patricia Chase-Green has expressed grave dissatisfaction over the way the environment is left after public social events. During the Independence activities, the popular jubilee celebration area around the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground was left in an unsightly condition with garbage scattered on the parapet and roadway.
Mayor Green said: “This act is totally unacceptable since the Council is working tirelessly to ensure that the environment is consistently cleaned.” And so far the Council has expended millions of dollars to clean drains and canals, restore parapets and verges in the City, she added.
The Mayor is encouraging persons who hold public events to ensure that proper arrangements are in place to facilitate garbage collection and disposal from the site. They should also provide onsite refuse receptacles to accommodate waste generated during these functions.
After such activities the Council is bombarded with calls from citizens about the different areas being littered with garbage.
“I am urging all promoters of social events to exercise more care and caution for the environment, even as they seek to promote social activities,” said Mayor Chase-Green.
She further noted that if this unfriendly environmental attitude persists, the Council would have to review the processing fees that are paid to hold these events.
Chase-Green is therefore calling on promoters and patrons to adopt a more environmentally-friendly attitude during social activities.
“Promoter and patrons, it is important that you work with the Council to promote a clean, green City,” the Mayor urged.
