Melville, Wiltshire shine as Woodpecker Squash gets underway

ALEX Melville and Larissa Wiltshire shone brightly when the Guyana Squash Association (GSA)/Woodpecker Products National Junior Championships got underway on Tuesday evening at the Georgetown Club Courts, Camp Street, Georgetown.According to a release from the GSA, Melville, playing the Boys Under-19 category defeated Daniel Islam 11-1, 11-3, 11-6, while Wiltshire, playing in the same age group, but in the Girls’ category, thrashed Sarah Lewis 11-1, 11-4, 11-2.
Also in winners’ row on Tuesday night were Taylor Fernandes who trounced Makeda Harding 11-1, 11-3, 11-8 in the Girls’ Under-19 while in the Boys’ Under-19, Alex Cheeks bettered Matthew Phang 11-4, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9.
In the Boys’ Under-11 category, Michael Alphonso defeated Nathan Rahaman 11-4, 11-1, 11-3; Ethan Jonas upstaged James Mekdeci 8-11, 11-8, 11-1, 11-0 and Demetrius De Abreu got the better of Kamir Khan 11-4, 11-2, 11-6.
In the Girls’ Under-13 age group, Kirsten Gomes thrashed Haley Carpenter 11-4, 11-6, 11-1; Madison Fernandes blanked Teija Edwards 11-0, 11-0, 11-0 and Abosaide Cadogan got past Aliyah Persaud 11/5, 11/3, 11/5.
The Boys’ Under-15 age group saw Daniel Islam rout John Phang 11-2, 11-0, 11-1; Anthony Islam overcome Samuel Ince-Carvahal 11-3, 11-3, 11-4; Shomari Wiltshire overwhelm Jason Gomes 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 and Gianni Carpenter get the better Lucas Jonas 11/8, 11/5, 11/7.
In the Boys’ Under-17 category, Alex Cheeks got past Anthony Islam 11-9, 13-11, 11-8, while on the distaff side, Rebecca Low overpowered Maya Collins 11-6, 11-8, 11-6.
Matches continue this evening at the same venue starting at 18:00hrs.
