IN front of a capacity crowd on Sunday at the South Dakota Circuit, the Guyanese dragsters showed their mettle when it mattered, as the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club held its King of Drags meet.Coming under heavy pressure from the over 20 Surinamese competitors, the locals were able to hold their own in the fastest category of the day, the ‘A’ or 9-second and unlimited class.
That trophy belonged to Asurdin Mohammed and his Nissan GTR as he held off the challenges of the Surinamese old school Chevrolet Nova and their Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra.
Both wins were a blowout by the GTR as his launches and shifts were as clinical as ever on his way to the dominance of the class.
Mohammed also picked up the fastest time of the weekend with an 8.2 secs in the quarter mile.
In the B class, Suriname’s Ryan Chakwri and his Toyota Chaser reigned supreme while his countryman Ashian Cajaram won the ‘C’ class with the same make of car
The ‘D’ class was won by Raymond John and his Chaser as well, while the ‘E’ class was picked up by Sachin Ramotar’s Toyota Starlet.
Parmamand Ramcharan (Toyota Carina AT170) and Steve Raganauth (Toyota Sprinter AE91) were the respective winners of the ‘F’ and ‘G’ classes while Isaac Ramcharitar (Toyota Corolla NZE) won the ‘H’ Class
Classes were based on the times done in the quarter mile with ‘A’ being the fastest.
Meanwhile the bikers were steamrolled by the Surinamese, who won both the 600 and 1000cc classes through Giovanny Slagveer and Tom Gumperts.
Following Sunday’s meet, the Surinamese extended an invitation for the Guyanese to tour that country once their next drag event has been set up.
