CITY Constabulary ranks shot and apprehended a knife-wielding man in Stabroek Market early yesterday morning when he was confronted at an electronics goods stall after a break-in.The injured suspect was identified as 25-year-old Delmar Booker of South Sophia Squatting area and he is currently under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital, nursing a gunshot wound.
Chief Constable Andrew Foo said that around 02:30hrs yesterday, the Constabulary received information about a disturbance within the city market. He said that a team that was making regular checks to Mayor and City Council (M&CC) property immediately responded and discovered that padlocks on the south-western end of the market had been breached. Further checks also revealed that the stall at Electronics City had been broken into.
Foo said that ranks initially called out to the suspect and demanded that he relieve himself of all weapons and exit the stall. However, the man emerged with a knife and advanced towards the ranks. Despite warnings he persisted and one round was discharged, hitting the suspect in his right leg.
A haversack containing a number of stolen items, which included valuables such as cellphones, cameras and tablets were removed from the scene. A number of tools used in the break-in were also found at the site,including crowbars, pliers and scissors.
Meanwhile, operators of Electronics City expressed gratitude for the Constabulary’s quick response. They said the thief would have carted off more than $2M in electronic items. M&CC officials disclosed that the man will be charged and placed before the court soon.
