THE body of Tactical Services Unit (TSU) rank Akeem Hyles, who drowned in the Potaro River on Friday last, was recovered on Sunday morning. ‘F’ Division Commander Ravindradat Budhram confirmed that the body has been discovered and is expected to be out of the region by today.
Police say that 22-year-old Police Special Constable 14536 Akeem Hyles of the TSU was among a team of Joint Services personnel and officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) in a boat in the Amatuk Falls area of the Potaro River last Friday, when the vessel capsized and the constable drowned.
Hyles had departed Ogle Airport on Friday morning along with other ranks who were dispatched to assist the GGMC officials in dealing with illegal mining being carried out in the Kaieteur National Park area.
According to officials, the Cuyuni-Mazaruni areas, especially the Potaro River, can be deadly for those who are not familiar with the route and traversing it.
The young policeman, who hailed from New Amsterdam, Berbice, has been described by seniors in the TSU as an excellent young man, who will be missed.
