AFTER successfully completing a two-day Secondary Schools Development Workshop for Physical Education and Sports teachers, in collaboration with the Department of Education, Region 6 Allied Arts Department on Sunday, the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) has moved a step further.According to a release, the BVA handed out a quantity of equipment and gear including balls for training and playing purposes, nets, rules and scoring books and other literature.
The workshop was held at the Port Mourant Training School annex and volleyball court at Port Mourant, Corentyne, and attracted 14 schools.
President of the BVA, Levi Nedd, did the honours with Physical Education and Sports Officer in the Region and member of the National Sports Commission Inga Henry delivered on behalf of the Department of Education.
The activity was held under the theme “Keep The Ball Flying” which is the theme of the BVA.
Henry, in thanking Nedd and the BVA, stated that it is part of the Ministry’s objective to re-integrate Physical Education and Sports into the school system.
She stated that she is very impressed with the work that the BVA is doing and lauded the BVA for being the first on board and called upon other associations to take a page out of the BVA’s book and join with the Department of Education to get sports back into the school system.
Nedd thanked Henry for giving the BVA the opportunity to impart the knowledge to the teachers and to work with the school system.
Volleyball, he said, is part of him and he is always willing to assist in any way possible.
The BVA plans to do intensive follow-up with all the schools that participated. Liaison persons include some national players who have already been appointed to work along with each school.
The programme is the first in a series of activities for PE and Sports teachers. It was also used to get the teachers better equipped to prepare the students who are writing PE at the CXC level.
