THE tale of ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ is about this London lawyer, who, by day, is this quiet, ‘mousy’ physician, but when night comes, transforms into the polar opposite: The intimidating Mr Hyde.
We Guyanese have our own such case here, with the coming of Hubert Norville, alias ‘Juke Ross’, to the music scene. Hubert Norville is a Guyanese-born singer, song-writer and guitarist. Born March 11, 1994, this 21-one-year-old has been slowly honing his craft over the last three years, ever since his first performance with Music Unlimited.
A budding doctor, Hubert is currently on scholarship at the Texila American University, where he is pursuing his other passion: Medicine.
This passion of his for medicine comes from seeing his mother, a nurse by profession, taking care of persons in the community in which he lives.
He also attributes his passion for music to his mother, who would play music while they did little things around the house.
He was an avid cricketer with the Georgetown Cricket Club before his music pursuits and studying caught up. He claims that he’s lost interest in cricket after picking up the guitar and focusing on the music.
He is also a poet, and this has made his transition to song-writing a success. “I’m an old soul, and I’m always teased about being soft-spoken and reserved; but that’s who I am.”

THE TRANSFORMATION
However, the transformation occurs when he takes on the moniker, ‘Juke Ross’, which is his stage name. The transformation is so apparent, that anyone could see it a mile off; even Ray Charles, who happens to be one of his sources of inspiration, were he alive today.
When performing as ‘Juke’, he is captivating, and exudes a kind of confidence that is infectious. The soft-spoken person that you could be talking to a minute earlier becomes outspoken; the change that’s so instantaneous it can catch you off-guard.
A week and two days ago, he released “Colour Me”, his first studio-produced single, and with its beautiful lyrics, coupled with angelic vocals and an instrumental which plucks at the strings of the soul, this newcomer has announced his arrival.
He is currently in production with his studio album, which he plans to release in another few months.
So, when you see Hubert coming your way, don’t be fooled by his soft-spoken nature, because at any moment, you can be introduced to the vehement ‘Juke’.
“Colour Me” is available for listening on Facebook and Youtube on his pages.
