MOTOR-racing fans will be in for a treat next weekend when the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) opens its season on February 7 with its first Endurance race of 2016 at the South Dakota Circuit. The event is expected to dust the cobwebs off drivers in what is seen as a very active year for racing, both locally and on the regional front.
In keeping with tradition, cars will be classed into groups based on engine capacity and will compete for three hours along the largest version of the South Dakota Circuit.
Registration is ongoing at the Club’s Thomas Lands office during business hours and participants are urged to register early with Vice- president of the club Shairaz Roshandin saying that “So far we have about 20 competitors registered already.”
Roshandin also revealed that this time around, the club is offering short races around the small track with cars being grouped according to their engine capacity as well.
The five- lap races he noted, will see street cars that have been approved by an external scrutineer doing five laps around the small circuit as a lead-up to the three- hour endurance.
“Over the years endurance has been growing,” said Roshandin, adding that “It started out as entertainment for the drivers, but it has grown into a spectator sport.”
He expects over 30 cars on the grid for the event come Sunday.
The club has also announced that spectator admission is free and the event begins at 10:00hrs.
The GMR&SC will hold its Annual General Meeting and election of office bearers on February 11 at its Thomas Lands office..
