A STUNNING performance by Guyanese-born racer Calvin Ming resulted in an almost perfect start to the Suzuki Radical Series, during the second round on Sunday at the Bushy Park raceway in Barbados.Ming, who suffered car issues in the lead-up to last weekend’s competition, thrilled race fans at the Bushy Park Raceway when he picked up two first-place and one fourth-place finishes.
During the practice sessions, Ming clocked an unofficial time of 58.48 secs with the current official lap record set at 58.9 by Barbadian Sean Maloney.
He also returned on Saturday to take the second spot on the grid for Race one, which he led from start to finish, but was given a 10 seconds penalty for jumping the start, which relegated him to fourth place.
In the second race, which featured a reverse grid, Ming started in 3rd but on lap one rocketed to the front to take the race as he ran unchallenged.
Race three proved the most challenging for the young Guyanese as he started second behind the Barbadian Sean Maloney with the later holding a stiff defensive line.
Ming, employing all the tricks he learnt in his karting career as well as his F4 stint, tried valiantly to pass the experienced Bajan but could not overhaul the defensive line being used by the hometown hero.
However, still in hot pursuit of the day’s second win, the 19-year old took advantage of a high speed corner to employ a very well timed and precise manoeuvre to pass Maloney at over 130 mph, showing his skill and dexterity.
Following that series, Ming jetted off to Miami yesterday before they depart this morning for the second round of 3 races in the Mexican F4 FIA Championship series this weekend.
