Christopher Franklin returned to championship honours when he stormed the open senior male division of the Guyana Table Tennis Association’s Senior National Championships over the weekend at the National Gymnasium.Franklin who took a hiatus from the sport returned in fine form to finish atop the men’s rankings in the round robin finals, demoting Nigel Bryan to second and Edinho Lewis to third places.
Meanwhile, the C class action featured some exciting play with the final coming down to Tyriq Saunders and Nicholus Romain with the latter returning a three game to nothing win.
Saunders finished second while Shavin Greene copped the third spot after beating off Kaysan Ninvalle.
The B Class also saw Romain taking top honours, this time ahead of Kevon Corbin and Kyle Edghill who finished second and third respectively.
At the U 21 level, Shemar Britton was made to work hard for his title after being taken to the limit by Edghill four games to one.
On the female end of things, Chelsea Edghill took both the Women’s U 21 and open division.
Selenas Jackman and Aneka Phillips finished second and third in the U-21 class while in the women’s singles, Natalie Cummings and Jody-Ann Blake were the other two podium finishers in the open division.
In closing off the tournament, president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association Godfrey Munroe contended that the GTTA had run off a successful event after a four year hiatus, adding that “the year seems bright for the sport.”
Also president was NSC member Nigel Hinds, himself a junior tennis player in the earlies reminded the champions to continue to train hard and push for excellence.
The GTTA was also the beneficiary of some equipment from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) inclusive of balls, racquets, and tables.
