TWENTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Kevin Phillips of O J Street, Rosignol,West Bank Berbice, accused of four counts of burglary in the village was remanded to custody without bail by Magistrate Rhondell Weaver presiding at the Blairmount Court on Tuesday.
Phillips will remain in prison until January 26, when the charges will be brought back to court for a progress report.
Police alleged that Phillips burglarised four homes on Old Year’s night and stole quantities of money and jewellery
He was accused of breaking and entering the dwelling house of Asraf Ally, a fisherman of Rosignol, West Bank Berbice and stealing one pair gold bangles, two gold earrings, two gold chains, two gold fingerings and one cellphone.
He also allegedly broke and entered the businessplace of Deonarine Madramootoo and stole $52,000 in cash, property of Amanda Madramootoo, a daughter of the owner and a sales girl at the Madramootoo business establishment.
The third charge against him stated that during the evening, on the same date, he stole one gold earring, property of Rozanna Singh, daughter-in- law of Madramootoo
The fourth charge accused him of stealing $10,000 and a quantity of Brazilian jewellery, property of Parbati Madramootoo, wife of Deonarine.
The charges were laid indictably, so he was not required to plead.
Magistrate Weaver refused bail following an application by Court Prosecutor Corporal Raquel Mars.
The prosecutor had requested that bail be refused on the ground of the seriousness of the offence.
Phillips, who said he was a fisherman, had earlier readily admitted that he was no stranger to the court on such charges.
