TWENTY-nine-year old Steven Martindale of Fourth Avenue, Bartica, was yesterday placed on bail in the sum of $300,000 after he was charged with having a firearm when he was not licensed to carry it. The charge stated that on January 11 at the backdam, he had in his possession one 9mm submachine gun without being the owner of a licence.
On the day in question, the police said they were conducting a search of a mining camp and they found the gun in a cupboard next to the defendant’s bed.
Defence counsel stated that his client was a licensed firearm holder since he was attached to the security firm and mining camp in that area. The police found several guns and ammunition in a secured area. The gun that they found was no longer in use and it was placed in another box which was not secured. He also made an application for reasonable bail for his client.
Martindale was granted bail and the matter transferred to the Bartica Magistrates Court on January 22, 2016.
