Mayor’s 81st birth anniversary seven-a-side f/ball tournament

WHEN the quarter-final action in the Mayor’s 81st birthday seven-a-side football tournament got underway last Sunday at the Den Amstel ground, West Coast Demerara, Uitvlugt’s Trayon Bobb registered a helmet-trick (four goals) in his team’s 5-1 win against Haslington to secure a semi-final place.

The four goals off Bobb’s boot carried his total amount of goals in the tournament to 10.

This was enough to earn him the Highest Goalscorer and Most Valuable Player (MVP) tournament awards.

For his efforts, Bobb received the MVP award from Georgetown’s Mayor Hamilton Green who witnessed the games and assisted with the presentation of prizes to the respective winners.

For scoring the most goals in the competition, Bobb will receive a three-piece suite, compliments of AH&L Kissoon.

Playing the final match of the tournament, Uitvlugt edged out Pouderoyen 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out to take the Mayor’s Cup trophy and the $200 000 first prize, compliments of John Fernandes Limited.

Pouderoyen walked away with the $100 000 second prize and the Youth and Sport trophy.

The third-place play-off was decided on penalty kicks when Kitty prevailed over hosts Den Amstel 1-0. With the victory they earned $70 000 and the China Trading trophy, while the hosts (Den Amstel) won $30 000 and the Business School trophy.

Ricks and Sari Agro Industry Limited was on board and donated food hampers to all the players of both Uitvlugt and Pouderoyen team members.

When the action got underway on Sunday at 14:00hrs, Kitty defeated Lima Dam 4-1, compliments of a hat-trick from Anthony Sancho and a supporting goal from Donald McKenzie.

Uitvlugt then humiliated Haslington 5-1 with Bobb’s four goals and another from Cordell Mars. Jamal Harvey scored for Haslington from the penalty spot.

Victoria and Pouderoyen played to a 0-0 draw at the end of regulation time. However, Pouderoyen came out victorious of the resulting penalty shoot-out by a 3-2 margin to book a semi-final spot.

Mahaica Determinators and Den Amstel had to go to the penalty shoot-out route to determine the other semi-finalists and Den Amstel prevailed by a 2-1 margin.

Pouderoyen then inflicted a 2-0 win against Kitty, compliments of one goal apiece from Marvin Josiah and Dextry Adams.

Uitvlugt then booked their place in the final, once again via a penalty shoot-out, this time they disposed of Den Amstel 1-0.
