Large turnout at BVA’s first General Council meeting

THERE was a large turnout when the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) held its first General Council meeting following the election of the executive committee in December last year.
According to reports, the meeting which was held at the Guysuco Training Centre Hostel, Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice was chaired by newly elected president Levi Nedd. There was a large turnout of clubs coming from Orealla in the Corentyne River, Upper and Lower Corentyne, Black Bush Polder and West Berbice.
During the meeting a number of initiatives were taken and decisions made.
The meeting looked at the registration of teams and clubs, during which time 10 senior male teams were registered, four junior male and six female teams
One of the main items on the agenda was the formulation of a mission statement for the BVA for the year 2016.
The planning of an outreach to Orealla which was spearheaded by Keshan Persaud was also high on the agenda. Other outreaches to Black Bush and remote areas are also planned.
The meeting looked at the formation of a referee’s commission which will select a pool of referees and organised training and development for the referee.
Afraaz Hussain was elected to head the referees’ commission.
A coach’s commission which will be chaired by Levi Nedd was also put in place.
A five-man selection committee was also elected. That committee which will be chaired by Nedd includes Afraz Hussain, Udhisther Seelochan, Rashaad Razak and Krishen Persaud of Orealla.
A comprehensive needs analysis for the BVA was also looked at, with the construction of a roof over the Port Mourant all-weather court being the main initiative.
During the meeting former president Gregory Rambarran handed over a number of equipment and periodicals he had in his possession to the BVA. Rambarran was also sworn in as an Ex-officio member. Samuel Whyte was sworn in as the PRO.
The Association has also drawn up plans for the year in keeping with its motto: ‘Committed to promoting and developing Volleyball in Berbice’.
