Under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Security, the Co munity Policing Groups of West Berbice, B 1 division, Thursday last handed over a complete portable basketball system to students of the Fort Wellington Secondary School to enhance their sports curriculum.The hand over was done by Staffer of the Ministry and Liaison Officer for the CPGs in West Berbice Carl Sutton in the compound of the school at Fort Wellington West Coast Berbice..
Sutton said that as a resident he had had passed by the school on a number of occasions and had seen the basketball court but no poles or baskets and had as a result decided to get the equipment from the Ministry for the benefit of sports by the students.
Those present at the handing over included Interim Chairman of the B1 Division Milton Ragbeer, , Secondary Education Officer Sadiek Ishmael on behalf of the Department of Education Region 5 (Mahaica.Berbice) , Headmistress of the School Ms Yonette and students and teachers and members of the CPGs in the area.
Sutton said that the involvement of the Ministry of Public Security and the CPGs was a new orientation for policing groups.
“In addition to Policing, we have moved to welfare and youth development and sports and other aspects of community development, since these elements go hand in hand with safe and productive communities,” he said.
Ms Walters thanked the CPG and the Ministry of Public Security for the equipment which she said will be properly taken care of and fully utilised.
The B1 Division of the CPGs stretches from Ithaca on the West Bank Berbice to the right bank of the Abary river.
