A 12-memebr jury was yesterday unable to arrive at a unanimous decision (verdict) as a result of a 10 to 2 proportion and as such there was a hung jury.A re-trial was announced by presiding Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the High Court re-trial of Anthony Morrison.
Following the disclosure, a seemingly upset Morrison was led away to prison to await his third re-trial.
The charge against the accused is that on May, 2012, he murdered Donna Thomas at their Lot 65 Cross and D’urban Streets, Georgetown home. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
State Prosecutor Stacy Goodings in her opening address to the jury said the duo shared a common law relationship and resided at the said address where Morrison allegedly murdered the woman.
The lifeless and bloodied body of Thomas was found in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds to both hands.
Goodings disclosed that the state’s case was circumstantial.
At the end of Morrison’s first trial, before Justice Navindra Singh last year, a jury was unable to arrive at a unanimous verdict.
The cause of death was given as asphyxiation due to compression to the neck compounded by blunt force trauma to the head. Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh testified and revealed the cause of death. in this trial.
He added that the deceased had 16 incised wounds to one hand while, the other had six such wounds which is considered to be defensive wounds.
Dr. Singh told the court that the wounds were not fatal but contributed to significant bleeding and the victims died as a result of being deprived of oxygen and the heart stopped.
The post mortem was performed on the body on June 1, 2012, five days after the corpse was found. It is alleged that the woman was murdered between May 26 to 27, 2012.
