THIRTY-four-year-old Delon Duncan of Block ‘C’ Sophia turned himself over to traffic investigators at the Kitty Police Station yesterday morning in the presence of a lawyer. He also admitted that he was the errant driver one week ago in that fatal accident on Sheriff Street that claimed the life of 17-year-old Travis Bollers.
He was, however, not fully cooperative with the ranks, as, on the advice of his lawyer, he refused to give the police an oral or written statement regarding the incident. What his lawyer failed to advise him was that he should not accompany the police to the scene of the accident.
Crime Chief Dion Moore confirmed that the errant driver did accompany ranks to the accident scene, and indicated to them the point of impact on the night of the accident.
Moore says that while the driver’s refusal to provide ranks with a written or oral statement in the matter could have resulted in the police having an uphill task to build a case against him, his accompanying the police to the scene and pointing out where he had actually struck the motorcyclist was as good as giving a statement, because it places him at the scene on the night of the accident.
Persons following the matter have expressed satisfaction on social media that closure might finally be forthcoming for survivors of the deceased as they prepare to lay him to rest.
On Tuesday afternoon, after an entire day of searching and acting on information, the police were able to recover the vehicle that Duncan was driving at the time of the accident. Duncan also admitted to the police that the vehicle, currently impounded at Traffic Headquarters, was indeed the one he had been driving on the night of the accident.
The vehicle, motor van PHH 5201, is registered to one M. Singh, who reportedly resides on Hadfield Street, and operates a hardware store.
Bollers and his cousin were last Thursday riding along Sheriff Street when they were struck from the motorcycle by the now recovered vehicle as it dashed out of Pike Street onto Sheriff Street.
The vehicle was recovered in North Sophia, beyond Pike Street.
Hours before the vehicle was recovered, Bollers’ relatives and friends held a picketing exercise, calling for justice for the young man, and for the killer to turn himself in.
Prior to that, said relatives and friends had taken to social media, pleading with persons to pass on any useful information they may have that could have led to the capture of the errant driver.
